District level Parliamentary Debate Championship in Surkhet

International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) Impact Award 2024 recipient, Ms. Susmita Giri recently organized the ‘District level Parliamentary Debate Championship’ as a part of her ‘IVLP Impact Award Project’, among 10 schools from Birendranagar participating.

This program was conducted in two phases, first focusing on the teachers and second on students.

In the first phase of this program, Ms. Susmita in collaboration with Debate Network Nepal initially conducted A Three-Day teachers’ training on ‘Integrating South Asian Parliamentary Debate into their English curriculum’ with the them of ’empowering students through empowering teachers.’

Secondary level English Language Teachers from 10 different schools underwent A Three-Day teachers’ training in July. They had one and half months to prepare their students for the District Level Debate Championship.

Similarly in the second phase of this program, she organized the ‘District level Debate Championship’ where 10 schools, three students from each school, competed in the championship. This program was continued for 3 days, after two days of intense debate, only two teams made it to the final .  SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Surkhet bagged the trophy of the championship and also the best speaker award.

This program aimed at enhancing student’s critical thinking, debating skills and English language speaking.

The main purpose of this program was to introduce the concept, format, and educational benefits of South Asian Parliamentary Debate to secondary level English teachers, as well as to equip them with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively implement South Asian Parliamentary Debate in their English teaching classrooms.

Students’ enthusiasm and teachers’ commitment to continue the Debate clubs in their schools is one of the significant achievements of this program.
